Synthesis Paragraph

Throughout the passage Hosseini uses many literary techniques that helps convey a larger message toward the end of the paragraph. He commences the passage by reflecting on his correct life, driving up the Californian coastline, dwelling on his past and contrasting between life in America and life in Afghanistan. He mentions everything seems bigger in scale in America than it does in Afghanistan. He interestingly mentions Baba’s old house and compares in to a "servant's hut"(135). The house symbolizes poorness in America, but symbolizes wealth in Afghanistan. Here we see a huge economical discrepancy between Afghans and Americans. Amir further goes on to speak about how "Kabul had become a city of hairlipped ghosts"(135). He uses ghosts to convey and symbolize death, as Kabul is no longer a place in which to pursue your dreams and happiness, it is now a place of lifeless charm, following its gruesome transition under the Mujahadeen and the Taliban. As Hosseini concludes his passage, he mentions a metaphor which combines the whole passage in a conclusive manner. This metaphor symbolizes the importance of a river, and how the river has capabilities in curing one’s past conscience. Amir compares America to a river and he states that the river (America) has the ability in curing him of his past and helping him move forward. Ever since the rape to Hassan, Amir has felt a guilt which he has been unable to dispose of. In Afghanistan society doesn't work like it does in America. If he were to try and cure himself of his memories in Afghanistan, then he would immediately get killed. Furthermore Amir wouldn't be able to move on from his past in Afghanistan as he wouldnt have the freedom to do so. In America there are no limitations to what one can do, however in Afghanistan you are constantly monitored, and you have no accesibilty to anywhere. You are enclosed. Hossieni continues to describe the river as being "unmindful of the past"(136),  and continuously "roaring along"(136). This signifies that the river can help Amir embark on a new journey with a new beginning. He can be able to live his life without constantly being reminded of his fateful past and out of the way of totaltarian regimes like the Taliban and Mujahadeen, who do nothing but terrorize civilians and strip them off their dignity and forbid their right to live.

  1. i like the comparison of the house in america and afghanistan because Baba's house isn't the best house in America but in afghanistan with that house one would be consider to be wealthy and of higher status
