This quote may seem of little importance, however Hosseini brilliantly uses personification to describe an ordinary thing and make it appear of greater importance. As he goes on to talk about Afghanistan, he mentions he "had only seen the ocean at the cinema"(135). This shows how the smallest of things can completely spark someones mind, who is not used to those surroundings. Most people in Afghanistan don't have the money or resources to travel, let alone see basic things like the ocean. Furthermore through them seeing the ocean in movies and through other media's makes the whole realism of it seem even more grandeur.
