Hosseini uses a Metaphor to use America as a place in which he can move forward in life and dispose of his past. He mentions the river is "unmindful of the past" and that he can "wade [in it] and let [his] sins drown to the bottom". This helps symbolize the importance of a "future" for Amir and his desire to embark on a new journey in his life. It further goes to show how in America he has the capabilities in discarding his past, which he didn't have in Afghanistan. This shows a contrast between life in America and life in Afghanistan. In America a person has a lot more freedom to do what one desires. In Afghanistan there is a restriction as to what a person can do freely. The Taliban have practically stripped away life from the Afghans, they have taken out the joy in kite flying, and have removed its country's' national pride.

  1. I like how you use the metaphor to compare America and Afghanistan.
