"America was different. America was a river,
roaring along...Someplace with no ghosts, no memories, and no sins"(136).
Hosseini
uses a Metaphor to use America as a place in which he can move forward
in life and dispose of his past. He mentions the river is "unmindful of
the past" and that he can "wade [in it] and let [his] sins drown to the
bottom". This helps symbolize the importance of a "future" for Amir and
his desire to embark on a new journey in his life. It further goes to
show how in America he has the capabilities in discarding his past,
which he didn't have in Afghanistan. This shows a contrast between life
in America and life in Afghanistan. In America a person has a lot more
freedom to do what one desires. In Afghanistan there is a restriction as
to what a person can do freely. The Taliban have practically stripped
away life from the Afghans, they have taken out the joy in kite flying,
and have removed its country's' national pride.
I like how you use the metaphor to compare America and Afghanistan.
