Insight Paragraph

While winnowing through my external sources I was able to retrieve very valuable information. As I read through the CNN article about "The Taliban's Rules" I was not surprised at all. It was as grim as I had expected it to be. In the Kite Runner we get a clear understanding of the strictly run government, which the Taliban pursues. For example when the Taliban outlaw kite flying and playing cards. This shows how much disregard they have toward the Afghan civilians. Furthermore it shows only one thing, that they are only looking to increase their power. Afghanistan has never really had its fair share of peace, as the Mujahadeen, who were in control before the Taliban, were not any more peaceful and regarding of the people than the Taliban were. In the article, "Those Still in Kabul Cope With a Broken City" I was shocked to see the horrible state in which the government had left Kabul in. The solid fact that people were afraid of the government and scared to leave their homes are just indicators of how brutal and violent the Afghan government was and still is. In the novel, people were originally joyous at the fact the Taliban had gained political power. This is now understandable from the perspective in seeing what state Kabul was left in in 1992 by the Mujahadeen. However their joyous moments were quickly overshadowed by the Taliban, who quickly became violent and as a result their reputation started to fall dramatically. Recently they have been trying to resume power in Afghanistan and one could only hope that this time they are opposed by a larger population than was the case last time around.
